Above: The Sea Star
Our mascot for Expansion. Sea stars or starfish have been around longer than almost anything in the ocean. They have colonized every corner of the sea floor, ranging from tropical reefs and artic ice shelves to dense kelp forests and deep water trenches. Many are keystone species — playing a central role in their ecosystem. The secret to their success? Physical and ecological decentralization: A sea star can regenerate from even small bits of itself, minimizing the impact of predation and injury. While the adults are localized, they produce clouds of swimming young that can spread along ocean currents to new environments.
In the same way, Expansion projects infuse systems and communities with the strategic and cultural DNA of the entire enterprise, building responsiveness, longevity, and durability throughout. They develop highly-mobile modules and individuals that out-perform the competition and aggressively search out new opportunities.
